Anatomy of a Non-Profit

Anatomy of a Non-Profit

Aspire is hard.  Women helping women is not a new idea.  The hard part is knowing what is actually helpful.  The natural inclination for women is to nurture .. it is part of us.  But helping… that is harder to pin down.  How do we help women who don’t know what they need or cannot yet communicate it?  Or how can we help women whose needs far exceed our ability to help? How can we help women when we don’t know who they are or how to find them.

In late 2017, a friend and I were invited to lunch by a woman who had attended a local fundraising event for Fairy Godmothers.  The annual lingerie luncheon was an event whose purpose was to collect pretty but practical lingerie to donate to organizations that provide emergency services to local women in need.  Every women loves a new pair of pajamas, socks or undergarments.  The speaker at the event was sharing the mission of the group and made a statement about how she wished we could effect real change in the lives of these women who are served by the organization.  That statement planted a seed.

The lunch was an invitation to begin a new non-profit whose purpose would be to help these women through connection with other local women.  We live in an university town so education and improving skill set was the first topic of conversation.  We decided that we needed to survey the services and opportunities that are already available in the community.  Women love to serve but duplicating services was not an idea that was supported by us.  So my friend and I agreed to co-chair this new baby of ours which did not yet have a name, a mission, or members.

Our founder was generous and hosted ladies to an introductory event.  The only information we had at the time was that we wanted to be effective and we needed a specific mission because defining ‘help’ wouldn’t be easy.  There were many of the attendees who listened to us try to articulate what the vision might be.  We raised some seed money from several generous women at that event.

We decided to open an account with our local community foundation,  Greater Manhattan Community Foundation.  (GMCF).   By establishing a fund with GMCF we would be able to raise funds under their 501c3 umbrella. However we didn’t yet have a name, after lots of discussion and a few more Tuesday lunches we arrived at the name Aspire.

Now that we had some seed money and a name, the next step was to find a date for a strategic planning meeting.  Who should we invite to be a part of this team?   The goals for this team would be to finalize a mission statement, choose a logo and recruit a board of directors.

We began by inviting ladies who we knew were on the front lines in the community to Tuesday lunch.  We spoke with the local technical college, other non-profits, former city commissioners, the ladies who founded Fairy Godmothers… really anyone who would listen to our question of what service is missing locally that would be most ‘helpful’ to the ladies we wanted to help.  There is that word again… what does help even mean?

RV summer

Last summer my husband and I spent some time bike riding through a local state park.  I was intrigued by the campers and their enjoyment of the outdoors.  We began the discussion of whether this lifestyle might be for us.  In December of 2016 we were presented with an opportunity for an affordable buy on a 5th wheel.  We purchased our Palomino Puma when the temperature outdoors was below zero.  We parked it in our driveway and plugged it into our water and electric and began to dream and plan about our summer adventures.

We have enjoyed two weekends in our RV and are loving it.

Immigrants….

The news is full of outrage citing discrimination against immigrants.  There are demonstrations and businesses who are closing for a day to bring attention to the important role immigrants play not only in our culture but in our economy.  I am fully aware of the hard work that both legal and illegal immigrants contribute to us as a nation.

Perhaps I am not hearing President Trump’s position on the travel ban correctly, but I didn’t hear him suggest that immigrants aren’t welcome or important.  I heard him say that the process of allowing non-citizens into the country is broke and needs fixing.  I would agree that the execution of the travel ban was chaos, but the underlying intent didn’t appear to me to be malicious or discriminatory.  However I tend to judge intent by action and not by speculation, or by what is reported by  biased news sources, both liberal and conservative.    It is possible that some can read President Trump’s mind to conclude what his hidden intent was.  I will stand on my ‘wait and see’ fence.

Why is all of this a big deal?  What benefits do I enjoy today as a United States citizen?  I realize that my benefit came to me from my ancestors who travelled on a boat to find new opportunity.  My citizenship was easily won simply by my parents having a fourth child.  But it is a citizenship that is mine all the same.  It requires me to obey the laws of the land, pay taxes, pay for my own medical coverage, and generally be productive inside of the free system that is uniquely ours.  In exchange, I expect the government to provide for my security, spend my tax money smart,  and protect my right of ownership of my property.   Why is asking immigrants or refugees to live by the same rules make me subject to accusations and name calling.    If instead, we all used the energy that we spend complaining and name calling, to demand and support an immigration policy that is fair and efficient, I believe that we would be a better nation.

Do Something….

I have rediscovered Seth Godin.  I believe he is a bridge builder rather than a finger pointer.  He encourages us to “do something” instead of wringing our hands in fear.  While the people on both sides of the debate are still spinning in the unknown … he says seize the day and DO SOMETHING.  Learn something, make something, connect something, fix something. Opportunities are everywhere to open our minds, to own our biases and to listen to others without anger, smugness or shaming.

Compounded Perseverance

Compounded Perseverance

Compounded Perseverance –

In 2016 I read a book by Darren Hardy called The Compound Effect.  Essentially it encourages us to establish good habits and take specific actions each day to effectively move us toward the life that we were intended to live, with purpose.  It was probably one of the books that I read whose ideas continue to float to the front of my brain each morning when I plan my day.  What can I do that will make tomorrow easier or move me toward a goal?  What is the next best action? What am I doing that is a waste of time that I should eliminate?

Perseverance

NOUN

  • steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success:

“his perseverance with the technique illustrates his single-mindedness” ·

Compounded Perseverance is then… the action of continuing to establish and build habit upon habit even though there is difficulty or delay in achieving the desired outcome or success.
